JAKE Spencer's two-year AFL dream came true yesterday when he was drafted as a rookie for AFL side the Melbourne Demons.

The 203cm ruckman is the first Townsville footballer to be drafted by a senior AFL club.

The 19-year-old, who moved to Townsville from Brisbane when he was 18 months old,  has only been playing Australian football for about five years, but with hard work and training he has realised his ambition.

IT has taken a while for Jake Spencer to get his head around his impending AFL debut.

But when the teenager took his place in the Melbourne Demons' team photo and looked around the MCG yesterday, the reality he is headed for the big time finally hit home.

Spencer will become the first Townsville product to play in the AFL tomorrow afternoon when he runs out for the Demons against North Melbourne at the game's spiritual home.
